Portuguese Metal Bands
From 1980s heavy metal to modern black metal, Portugal has a deep scene, and these bands with one record each make an easy way in.
Which Portuguese metal bands are worth knowing, and where should you start with each one? Portugal's scene is small by international standards but covers almost every style, from traditional heavy metal to gothic, industrial, black and brutal death metal. The bands below span four decades, with a short note on each and one record to begin with.
Heavy, thrash, gothic and industrial
These names laid the groundwork, most of them from the 1980s and 1990s:
- Tarantula (Porto, formed 1981): a long-running heavy and power metal band, often named as the first Portuguese metal act with a real impact abroad. Start with their self-titled debut album, Tarantula.
- Ramp (Seixal, formed 1989): the name comes from the initials of the founding members, and the sound moved from thrash towards groove metal. Start with Intersection (1995).
- Moonspell (Brandoa, Amadora, formed 1989 as Morbid God): the best-known Portuguese metal band worldwide, moving from black metal roots to gothic metal. Start with Wolfheart (1995).
- Heavenwood (Vila Nova de Gaia, formed 1992 as Disgorged): gothic metal with death metal weight. Start with Diva (1996), released by Massacre Records.
- Bizarra Locomotiva (Lisbon, formed 1993): industrial metal where electronics and machines matter as much as guitars. Start with Homem Máquina (2002).
Death and black metal
The extreme side of the scene has produced some of its most respected exports:
- Sacred Sin (formed 1991): death and thrash metal. Their debut, Darkside (1993), is an early Portuguese death metal album and the natural first stop.
- Filii Nigrantium Infernalium (roots in the late 1980s): raw black and thrash metal with a strong cult reputation, active on demos since the early 1990s. Start with Fellatrix Discordia Pantokrator (2005).
- Corpus Christii (Lisbon, formed 1998): aggressive black metal and one of the first Portuguese black metal bands to build an international following. Their debut, Saeculum Domini (2000), shows the primitive early sound; Luciferian Frequencies (2011) shows the band's later power.
- Analepsy (formed 2013): slamming brutal death metal with a heavy science-fiction theme. Start with Atrocities from Beyond (2017).
- Gaerea (Porto, formed 2016): modern black metal with atmospheric and post-metal elements, recognisable by the members' masked stage appearance. Start with Limbo (2020), their first album for Season of Mist.
How to explore further
These ten bands are only a starting point. Portugal also has a strong doom, grindcore and hardcore underground, and many smaller groups release their music on independent labels or directly through Bandcamp. Festivals such as SWR Barroselas Metalfest have long mixed Portuguese bands with international headliners, which makes their past line-ups a useful map of the scene.
